Alan Carter (Industry)

ImageAlan has been a director and in charge of the East London branch of Coastal & Environmental Services for the past three years and involved in a wide variety of environmental disciplines including Environmental Impact Assessments, Strategic Environmental Assessments, project feasibility studies, and Environmental Management System implementation and verification.  He has also presented papers on the reporting of environmental liabilities in terms of financial reporting requirements.

Prior to this, Alan worked for a number of years as a financial auditor with Ernst & Young in Texas an additional three years with Arthur Andersen in Chicago specialising in various environmental accounting and finance disciplines including cost accounting, financial auditing and SHE report verification. 

Alan has a PhD in Marine Biology and BCom Accounting degree from Rhodes University and BCompt Hons degree from UNISA.  Alan is a member of the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants and licensed in Texas. He is also a certified Environmental Management Systems Auditor in the USA and UK.  

 

Cosmas Ambe (Training)

ImageCosmas M. Ambe holds an MCom degree in Accounting from Wits University and is currently registered for a DCom degree in Accounting with UNISA. He is a senior lecturer and Faculty research coordinator of the faculty of Economic Sciences at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Cosmas is a member of the Southern Africa Accounting Association (SAAA), the European Accounting Association (EAA), the American Accounting Association (AAA) and the Asian Academic Accounting Association (AAAA). He has lectured at Wits University, developed materials and conduct training at national and international level. He has presented research papers at both local and international conferences in Spain, France, Korea and the Czech Republic and the USA. Cosmas is also the executive chairman of AHAC (PTY) LTD that conducts financial training and advisory services. Cosmas is the coordinator of a research focus area on Environmental Accounting and the Africa centre for Financial Innovation, Analysis and Research (AC-FIAR) in TUT.

 

Marie Janse van Rensburg (Secretariat)

ImageMarie is currently employed by Tshwane University of Technology (since January 1996) and holds a B Tech degree in Cost and Management Accounting.  She is currently busy with the professional qualification of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Marie is head of subjects for Cost and Management Accounting III. Marie is co-author of two Cost and Management Accounting question books and two Cost and Management Accounting textbooks.  Marie has presented a paper and several courses on a National level.

Maryna Möhr-Swart (Chairperson)

ImageMaryna Möhr-Swart has been the Assistant Environmental Adviser at the Chamber of Mines of South Africa for the past two years and is involved in advocacy and lobbying activities regarding various environmental issues. For the past five years she has been actively involved with and member of the UN International Expert Working group on Environmental Management Accounting. She has also presented papers on environmental management accounting at national and international conferences. Prior to this Maryna was Head of Department of Environmental Sciences (1994 – 2004) at Tswane University of Technology.  Maryna has an interesting mix of qualifications, namely a B Pharm degree as well as an MBA degree from the University of Potchefstroom, now known as the University of North West. She is currently busy with her D Tech: Environmental Management (to be completed by August 2006) focusing on an environmental management accounting model for the South African mining industry.

Phillip Jacobs

Phillip Jacobs obtained his B.Sc. (Zoo, 1989) and HDE (1990) from the University of Cape Town after which he obtained a B.Sc. (Hon, 1995) and M.Sc. (Zoo, 2000), from the University of the Free State.  He taught Grade 12 Physical Science in Kimberley from 1991 to 1995 until he started studying at the University of the Free State while working as a Research Assistant.  He then returned to teaching briefly before joining Eskom as a Senior Environmental Advisor.  During his time at Eskom his responsibilities included all aspects of Environmental Management both on an operational and corporate level.  In April 2003, he joined Gold Fields as the Environmental Manager at its Kloof Operation. 

His current responsibilities include managing environmental legal compliance, issues pertaining to environmental risk assessments, rehabilitation, demolition, mine closure, water management (including licensing and quality), waste management (including tailings and hazardous waste), air quality and to ensure that environmental management systems, processes, policies and resources are in place to achieve and maintain compliance.  He is also responsible for positioning the mine strategically in terms of sustainable development and has started implementing an environmental management accounting process. 

He has also completed several short courses that include auditing, impact assessments, law, waste management, rehabilitation, etc. and recently completed the Management Advancement Programme (MAP) at Witwatersrand Business School.

Seakle Godschalk (Finance)

ImageSeakle K.B. Godschalk holds an M Sc [Zoology] degree from the University of Cape Town.  From 1980 until 2006 he was responsible for the environmental program of the Department of Defence.  In that capacity he has served on numerous environmental committees, both regional and national.  He also co-chaired the SA-USA Environmental Security Working Group.  Seakle is a registered professional environmental scientist as well as a professional member of the SA Institute of Ecologists & Environmental Scientists.  In 2005 he completed his B Compt degree at Unisa, and is currently involved in post-graduate studies focusing on the link between sustainability reports and annual reports.  He is now combining both his academic fields by specialising in environmental accounting in a newly established consulting company Environmental & Sustainability Solutions.  He is involved in project meetings at the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants as well as the Accounting Standards Board, and serves on the Steering Committee for the establishment of an Environmental Goods and Services Forum under the auspices of the Department of Trade & Industry.

Thembi Kodisang

Thembi Kodisang is an Environmental trainer and consultant.  She specializes in waste systems and waste management under her company (Maqhawe Waste Consultancy). 

Prior to this Thembi was an environmental trainee at Tshwane University of Technology, were she developed the environmental and waste policies and procedures for the institution.  Her duties included creating and implementing environmental projects, preparing environmental advice for distribution in the university community, researching and reporting on environmental issues and waste management.

Thembi has a diploma in Environmental Management.  She is currently busy with her BTech: Environmental Management (to be completed November 2006) as well as a Project Management certificate.
